Mara Voss's husband has been dead eleven weeks when the phone rings and it's him.
Seven minutes a day. He knows about the loose stair and the drawer where the screwdrivers live and the thing she said in the car that nobody else heard. He knows what he was working on the night he went off the catwalk at Pier 9. And he is very clear that she should stop looking into it.
It isn't a ghost. It's worse than that, and it's a business.
There are rooms in this county with a bed, a kettle and a bulb that wants changing, and there are people sitting in them who said yes to a very kind man on a telephone and have not been outside since. Some of them have been in there nine years. Every one of them was chosen because nobody would notice.
Mara Voss is going to find them. What frightens her is how ordinary the people doing it turn out to be.
